The Winter Bathing Club Jomsborg in Aarhus, is with it’s 9,500 members Denmark’s – and probably the world’s – largest winter bathing club.
Vikingeklubben Jomsborg is a club for winter bathers and has its home at “Den Permanente Badeanstalt” in Risskov, in those months of the year where Aarhus Kommune is not opening it up for the public.
Badeanstalten – the ocean bath – is placed beautifully at the foot of Riis Skov’s steep slopes, sheltered from the west wind with an amazing view of Mols and Samsø.
About the Jomsborg culture
- We greet each other, take care of each other and ask each other for help and advice
- Everybody should have a pleasant experience – hence, we avoid offending each other’s decency
- We bathe in the nude and always take a bath before we enter the sauna – for hygienic reasons
- We sit on a large and dry towel in the sauna – for hygienic reasons
This film follows the changing of the seasons, everyday pleasures and the society life, as we meet some of the many Danes, that accommodate the bath’s facilities from August, when the winter bathing season sets off. A warm and human film in the coldest of seasons.
